On Sunday 15 August 2004, a happy band of 10 cyclists left Bell's Bridge at the SECC in Glasgow heading for Balloch at Loch Lomond along the marked cycle route .. an estimated distance of 20 miles. All the team members had sponsorship pledges to complete the route, and the return, for funds for the Ropka Glasgow Soup Kitchen. The weather forecast was for cloudy conditions, but staying warm and hopefully dry. The backup team of Humphrey, and Mae and Gwen, in their respective 'sag' wagons, were to meet the cyclists at two check-in points along the route to provide support, encouragement, drinks and a place to effect any running repairs.
Another two of the team joined up on the way .. the first Eric at Clydebank, and the second Eric at the Erskine Bridge (having pedalled all the way from Kilbarchan).
An initial shower of rain as the group passed the Waverley at the Science Centre did not dampen the enthusiasm, and progress was quickly made westwards towards the first check-in point at Clydebank Shopping Centre. Andy suffered the first broken glass puncture of the day just before the Renfrew Ferry, but was quickly back in action .. but running on a now-dodgy back tyre. A second incident at Clydebank was again quickly fixed, and the second stage to Milton near Dumbarton was begun. At the Happy Cycles shop in Bowling, Andy decided to spend some of his birthday money on a new tyre and continued with renewed confidence. A longish stop was made at Milton, then the final push through Dumbarton and on to Balloch was made.
A magnificent picnic was provided courtesy of Isa and Humphrey, and most of the group enjoyed a coffee afterwards in a local hotel before re-mounting the cycles for the return journey.

A tremendous total of £600 was estimated to have been raised for Soup Kitchen funds .. and a heartfelt thanks goes to everyone involved, not only for the time they gave up but also for the tremendous effort they put in!
