The Sponsored Walk to help raise funds for the Ropka Glasgow Soup Kitchen went ahead on Saturday 1 July with eight walkers arriving by various means at the Beech Tree Inn at Dumgoyne ready to take on a 12-mile section of the West Highland Way. Andy, Barbara, Craig and Ian travelled in Andy's car; the two Lithgow Wilsons arrived in Mae's mobile home, which was to serve as the day's 'sag wagon'; Stuart took an early train to Milngavie and walked the Way from there; and Steven drove from home directly. All were ready to set off just before the planned time of 10am.

The route follows the old Blane Valley railway through flat countryside until the village of Gartness, then starts to climb as the minor road towards Drymen is taken. After the first rendezvous point with the sag wagon at Gartness, the two Lithgows set off before everyone else at a cracking pace, and weren't seen again until the rendezvous at the halfway point in the Garadhban Forest. After bypassing Drymen, the route climbs again into the forest and the first views of Loch Lomond are seen.

Once again, the two Lithgows disappeared into the distance whilst the remainder strolled along the forest tracks before emerging on to the open hillside on the approach to Conic Hill. At this point the route descends before the ascent of the Hill, which is a bit of a nuisance, but everyone managed without difficulty. Four of the group opted to visit one of the summits before making the steep descent to the car park at Balmaha, arriving just after 3pm.

Stuart and Ian waited for Stuart's wife to arrive to collect them, while the rest of us piled into the wagon for the return to the Beech Tree Inn.

Our heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved, not only for the time they gave up but also for the tremendous effort they put in! And of course, to all our sponsors who are helping us raise money to help many of Glasgow's homeless people.!
