Tibetan Medicine at Rokpa
The History of Tibetan Medicine
Between the 8th and 13th centuries, Tibetan sages evolved a unique medical science, integrating the finest elements of Indian Ayurvedic, Chinese, Persian, Mongolian and indigenous Tibetan systems. It has flourished ever since, tried and tested on hundreds of millions of people. Even today, in the light of sophisticated modern medicine, the Chinese government is investing heavily in Tibetan medicine as a recognised efficient and cost-effective healthcare system.
Deeply rooted in the Buddhist ethic of compassion, Tibetan Medicine uses advice on diet and behaviour as a first resort in the treatment of disorders. This is usually complemented by herbal medication and, if required, external treatments such as moxibustion, which uses heated herbs or warmed herbal packs on meridian points similar to those used in acupuncture.
In Tibet, this medical system is used to treat everything, from accident to maternity, paediatrics to cancer. In the West, it tends more to be sought by those who have not found the healing they sought in modern medicine, or are looking for a gentler alternative. No system of medicine can cure all conditions, and every approach will have some side effects to the treatment. The authentic tradition practised by Tara Institute Doctors of Tibetan Medicine holds no promise of miracles, nor can it undo the suffering of old age or reverse the inevitability of death. But it does offer a true and holistic alternative when used alone or with western medicine.
